Why Learn CPR?

A common emergent situation is cardiac arrest, which occurs when a person's heart suddenly stops beating. In these cases, CPR can make a difference while waiting for first responders to arrive, as it simulates the beating of a person's heart and encourages blood flow. CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, an essential skill that can save lives.

CPR Facts

  • CPR can almost double a person's chance of survival from cardiac arrest.
  • Someone needs CPR if they are unresponsive, collapsed, aren't breathing, and don't have a pulse.
  • Perform CPR at 100-120 compressions per minute.
  • Two inches for each compression is perfect for effective CPR on an adult.
  • Chest compressions keep blood flowing to essential organs.
  • You should perform CPR as soon as you verify the person doesn't have a pulse.
  • CPR certification only takes a few hours and is easily accessible in many locations.
  • CPR saves lives!

What Are The Steps for CPR?

When thinking of the steps to take for CPR, remember the acronym CAB.

  • C = Chest Compressions
  • A = Opening the Airway
  • B = Give rescue Breaths

The steps to perform CPR are:

  • Check for hazards in the area, such as smoke, exposed electrical wires, fire, and dangerous liquids. Move the person away from hazards without exposing yourself if possible.
  • Notify emergency services or ask someone else to do so.
  • Check if the person has a pulse, is breathing, and is unresponsive. Move them to a stable, flat, hard surface if they’re unresponsive.
  • Clear their airway if you can.
  • Find the center of the person's chest, near their heart.
  • Compress their chest about two inches at 100-120 compressions per minute for 30 compressions, then give two breaths and repeat until emergency services arrive. Follow any instructions emergency services provide.
